Memorial Hospital of Carbon County (MHCC) was founded in 1921. This critical access hospital has been diligently serving its community for over 100 years. Founded on the Union Pacific Railroad line, Rawlins was historically a major passenger and freight station stop along the Transcontinental Railroad route—a distinction that shaped much of the city’s early history. Now, the bustling city of Rawlins is part of Carbon County, features many historical sites, and is home to a vibrant, welcoming community.
Things to Do
Wyoming Frontier Prison
This historic state penitentiary was built around the turn of the century from sandstone milled in the county. It’s known to have housed notorious outlaws from 1901-1981, including Butch Cassidy and Big Nose George. Today, visitors can enjoy guided tours and events throughout the year, plus special ghost tours every October.
Carbon County Museum
Originally founded in 1940, the Carbon County Museum has moved and evolved over the past several decades. As they walk through three separate galleries, museum goers will find numerous artifacts that have impacted the community over time, including the Washakie Hide Painting, an original Wyoming sheep wagon, and many other intriguing pieces. The Carbon County Museum also features a Children’s Zone to keep the little ones occupied and engaged.
Historic Downtown Rawlins
As a nationally designated historic district, Rawlins appeals to travelers and residents alike. The 60 – 90 minute historic walking tour offers a fascinating glimpse into Rawlins’ colorful past and bright future.
